Loop in lighting wiring is the modern cabling arrangements used in most installation.
Assuming your wiring uses the old core cable colours i e red live black neutral and green yellow earth then fig 1 shows the most common way your ceiling rose will be connected.

This is an alternative way of wiring a lighting circuit.
The permanent live wire is wired into the switch and the switched live into the switched live terminal.
The cable marked in is the supply from the consumer unit or fusebox.

The ceiling rose sometimes called a loop in ceiling rose or 3 plate ceiling rose is effectively a junction box for the power feed switch wire and pendant flex of a ceiling light.

This shows a ceiling rose with the cover removed.
Instead of taking the feed wire from the consumer unit to the ceiling rose it is taken to the switch.
If the cable colours in you ceiling rose are brown blue and green yellow you probably want to start here.
For it to work properly it has to be interrupted by a switch.
Generally it uses less materials and is quicker to install than radial junction box wiring it can however be a bit more complicated to work out the actual wires at a ceiling rose.
When a light fitting is attached to the ceiling rose it could be wired into the neutral terminal and the live terminal shown in the rose but it would of course be on all of the time.
The neutrals are connected together using a terminal connector.
